I am excited to announce that I have been added as a multimedia instructor to the Momenta Workshops India trip in January 2011.

I’m thrilled to once again be joining the talented, hard-working folks at Momenta to help people learn all about recording audio and adding it to their still images for more impact, as well as shooting and editing video.

It’s sure to be an amazing trip, as we’ll be working with NGOs in country. Each trip participant will actually get to produce work for an individually assigned NGO/non-profit, getting access to some incredible work that is being done in one of the poorest nations in the world. What an amazing experience!

There are still slots available, and people can sign up here.

I hope I’ll see you in India!

Looks like they’ll probably start doing a regular weekly video address starting in September. Check their website soon for some of our stuff!

This week I am taking time off from freelancing and researching and working on writing a business plan for my new venture (more on that later) to sink my teeth into learning Final Cut Pro. I’ve used the video editing software for the past few years while producing feature and documentary video pieces for The Washington Times, but until now my only real training in it was a couple of days at the Platypus Workshop, where they told us that “Final Cut Pro is such a complex piece of software that it makes Photoshop look like a Word document.”

So all this week I can be found sitting in Training Room A at Future Media Concepts in the Farragut corridor of the city.

My goal, after completing the course, is to sit for (and hopefully pass) the Apple Pro Certification Level 1 so that I will officially be an Apple Certified Pro in Final Cut Pro.

Two days in and I’ve already almost completely filled my notepad with notes. Yikes!

We will be exploring the Mekong Delta region and focusing on creating a travel narrative.

My husband and I traveled to Vietnam in 2008 and fell in love with the Delta region. The quiet, sleepy life along the river, still traveled in many cases by single-rower longboats, juxtaposes with the constant whir of Saigon, where the motorbike is king.

I’m excited to help aspiring photographers learn how to move beyond taking snapshots as we delve into life along the Mekong.

Thanks to my friend (and awesome photographer) Jamie Rose, I have discovered the Expo Disc.

If you’ve ever walked into a room and the light was just ugly ugly ugly and no matter what you did the exposure just wasn’t coming out right, or if, like me, you’re not so hot with setting your own custom white balance, man is this thing for you.

It’s basically a filter that snaps onto the front of your lens. You’ll have to set a custom white balance, but if you’re not sure how to do that on your camera they offer very easy-to-follow tutorials for just about every camera out there.

I am telling you, I just tried this out in my dining room, taking a picture of a plant using the “tungsten” white balance setting and then using the Expo Disc custom setting.

Check out the results for yourself.

I heart you, Expo Disc people! No more spending HOURS in post-production trying to fix color issues! Man, if only I had had this thing when I worked at The Gazette and was always shooting in those horribly ugly high school gyms…

picture taken using tungsten white balance on my d3

picture taken using the Expo Disc custom white balance–neutrals are NEUTRAL, not yellow! hooray!

My friend and fellow photographer Gary Fabiano was one of the many photographers who went to Haiti following the earthquake of Jan. 12. Gary recently completed a book, called “Fractured Earth,” that documents just how horrific conditions were in the country in the immediate days following the disaster.

While his images are sometimes tough to look at, they show the important truth of the situation in the country. Too often we Americans like our news (and news images) cleaned up for us, or we only want to see positive images. Sadly, this often leaves us with a skewed and undeveloped understanding of the world.

Gary is now selling his book in an effort to raise money for the many aid organizations on the ground working to rebuild and restore Haiti.

You can purchase his book here. I strongly encourage everyone to consider buying a copy, if for no other reason than to do something to help rebuild a nation that was devastated on Jan. 12.
